Luna is our rescue pit bull. She was abandoned and outside for who knows how long before she showed up on a porch. Luna was sweet enough and in need of help. Covered in fleas and ticks, the resident was kind enough to treat her but could not take her in as her other dogs were very protective. Animal control had no room for her but guessed she was probably around a year old. They posted pictures of her on all the local lost animal pages and after a week no one claimed her.
Our 13 year old akita/lab mix had just completed her last days and I was absolutely devastated. My friend said maybe you should get another dog. I wasn’t sure if we were ready, only a few days had passed since our loss. That’s when my scrolling paid off. There she was a beautiful white female pit with the most gorgeous baby blue eyes. For years I had dreamed of having a female pit bull. And here she was! I had to go meet her right away.
Luna warmed up to me pretty quickly but was hesitant around men. You could tell she had a history of abuse but I knew with enough love and time she would warm up to everyone. Even around the cats and kids she was loving. She slowly learned she was safe, even around men now.
We only had one problem. Luna would tear up every dog bed we gave her. Foam expensive ones, cheap thin ones, blankets we’d fold to make a bed. She would sleep in chairs and couches just fine. I decided we would try again and I found one she could feel truly safe in. I called it her dog bed house.
Here’s the exact one we bought:

If I wasn’t going to bed on time, she would come get me and was so excited to get in her safe dog bed house. We’d take it when we went to stay with family even and she loved it! It lasted us over a year before the constant in and out wore it down too much and we had to get rid of it.
So we were back to square one. She seemed happier now and I wanted to try a more conventional dog bed. I settled on this beautiful large copper brown donut bed. It is OEKO-TEK standard 100 certified, so it is made with chemicals safer for human health and the environment. That certification is important to me since in this day and age we have so many toxin exposures that wreak havoc on our health and I want to feel good about bringing things into our home. Right out of the box she absolutely loved it! It is soft, cushiony as the couch she loves, and most importantly for pit owners STRONG and DURABLE enough. I have already washed it twice and it comes out just as soft from the dryer as the day we got it. I was scared to get it in white but I probably will next time since it washes so well, I don’t have to be afraid of it getting dirty.
